Controversial plans to build homes on top of a block of flats have been approved, despite concerns over privacy.

The development to build two rooftop flats with balconies on the third floor of Trinity Court in Heathcote Grove, Chingford was unanimously approved by Waltham Forest council's planning committee.

Residents living opposite the site and in nearby Goldsborough Crescent opposed the plan, claiming privacy would be compromised and set a precedent for high buildings in the area.

MP Iain Duncan Smith and Conservative said the development would be an "eyesore".

Cllr Caroline Erics also backed residents' concerns, saying the extension would be "totally out-of-character".

However, the application was voted through unanimously.

Councillor Alan Siggers told the committee: "Overlooking issues is not sufficient enough to refuse permission."

Howard Green's home in Goldsborough Crescent backs onto Heathcote Grove.

The 68-year-old chartered surveyor claimed no site visit had been carried out before the plans were put before the committee.

"I'm just disappointed," he said.

"This is really sad for us and our neighbours.

"It's appalling it can be granted without anyone bothering to access the impact from within our homes."

Speaking after the decision, Cllr Erics, said: "I am keen for the developer to work with local residents".
