Prospective parliamentary candidates for Walthamstow have been invited to an open bid for votes ahead of the general election in May.

Waltham Forest Trade Union Council and the Church of England Parish of Walthamstow have joined forces to convene the ‘Walthamstow Leaders’ Debate’.

Labour's Stella Creasy, Conservative candidate Molly Samuel-Leport and Lib Dem candidate Simon Cheung have been invited to represent the main parties.

Smaller parties have also been invited, including Michael Gold for the Green Party and Nancy Taaffe for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).

Questions will be put to the parliamentary candidates about what their parties propose to do about the £30 billion cuts that have been voted through by the last government.

Answers will also be sought about what they will do to about Whipps Cross, and how they will deal with sky-rocketing rents.

Dave Knight of Unison and chair of the trades council said: “Given the thousand job cuts the people of this borough have suffered so far, we will be interested to hear candidates’ answers.

“I urge everyone to come along.”
