The council has dismissed a claim it offered land to a charity for a multi-million pound community centre in Walthamstow.

Social enterprise and charity Rooms of our Own has spent 18 months planning and designing a women’s centre to be built in a disused car park in St James Street.

The group said they developed the plan after receiving a draft legal agreement from the council after discussions in 2013.

A cafe, a crèche and hot desks for budding business owners, as well as space for women’s charities and housing are included in the plans.

The building would be divided into three areas under the proposal.

One would be available for the public, a middle area allocated to business women and a third section for women only.

There would also be 47 housing units to fund the project.

A Council spokesman said it must consider other bids for the land, which is believed to be worth around £3million.

“The council has spoken to Rooms of our Own and various other organisations about possible uses for the St James Street car park site but at no point have any offers or agreements ever been made,” he added.

“We have a duty to ensure that any future plans linked to the regeneration of the town centre and South Grove benefit the community, therefore the council is currently considering the best use for this piece of publicly-owned land.

“Should there be a decision to sell the land to enable development on the car park site, the council has a financial obligation to get the best consideration for its taxpayers. In this event, we would welcome formal bids from interested organisations, including Rooms of our Own.”

Campaigner and Rooms of Our Own director Wendy Davis said the charity is still waiting for news, despite being promised an update by Christmas.

The Waltham Forest resident said the group will be ‘devastated’ if they have to move elsewhere.

Discussions with the community have seen the plans backed by 30 charities, councillors and Jennette Arnold LAM.
