A line extension is set to bring a heritage railway only 100m from linking up with the London Underground network.

This Saturday (April 18), the Epping Ongar Railway will extend 800m down the line, bringing it within sight of Epping Tube station.

The move follows extensive engineering work to restore the line, and comes in time for the attraction’s 150th anniversary celebrations later this month.

Managers at the attraction hope the extension could lead to more developed links with the Underground network, with the possibility of an interchange at Epping station.

Dean Walton, business development manager for the railway, said: “The railway has seen an increase in passenger numbers every year since 2012, however the establishment of a direct link with London Underground at Epping would be expected to deliver far more passengers and therefore business for the local tourist economy.

“We would become the only heritage railway directly accessible from the Tube network and that prospect is very exciting.”

The railway recently drew national attention after it was revealed that a hardcore porn film was shot at the attraction earlier in the year.
