Plans are being drawn up to install CCTV at a vandalised playground.

Graffiti was sprayed on equipment behind the village hall on North Weald Common and glass was placed at the top of a slide.

The park, which cost £40,000, was officially opened in October following a year’sfundraising by community group, North Weald Mums.

Following the vandalism, the group contacted North Weald Bassett Parish Council in a bid to get CCTV installed at the Weald Common play area to deter future attacks.

Councillors agreed that CCTV should be a priority for the site following a vote.

At a meeting on Monday, councillors expressed concern over the availability of electricity at the site and an investigation was launched into whether it would be possible for a supply to be sourced from the village hall, or the nearby electricity sub-station.

North Weald Mums representative Sue Malpass said the group were prepared to fundraise again to meet the cost of the equipment.

She said: “I see CCTV as the only way we can try and deter what has happened up there.

“Not only was the park vandalised with graffiti but glass was inserted at the top of the slide which was a horrendous act which could have led to the injury, or worse, of a small child.

“I think the installation of CCTV can only act as a positive deterrent.”
