Thousands of children have been allocated their parents' first choice primary school, as Waltham Forest and Redbridge outperform the majority of London boroughs.

More than 85 per cent of children across both boroughs received good news as anxious families received offers on Friday (April 17).

Both boroughs topped the London average of 80.97 per cent, with Redbridge in fourth position at 86 per cent and Waltham Forest narrowly in sixth with 85.21 per cent.

In Waltham Forest, a total of 3,085 children were allocated the first choice and 538  offered an alternative.

Since 2008, the council has spent more than £10million expanding primary schools in an attempt to meet growing demand.

Collectively, an additional 32 classes have been created at Newport School in Newport Road, Leyton, Mission Grove Primary School in Buxton Road, Walthamstow and both Jenny Hammond and Davies Lane in Leytonstone.

Additional places have also been guaranteed at several academies, including Hillyfield Academy in Higham Hill Road, Walthamstow, Chingford Hall Primary Academy in Burnside Avenue, Chingford, and Barclay Primary School in Canterbury Road, Leyton.

Parents who were unsuccessful in getting their first choice have been given the option to stay on the school's waiting list or appeal the decision.
