Campaigners and health workers are set to meet to discuss the future of Whipps Cross Hospital.

Waltham Forest Save Our NHS has organised an event to kick start a public campaign over the Leytonstone Hospital, which was placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in March.

Inspectors found a widespread failure to provide basic levels of care and a culture of staff bullying my management.

The Trust’s financial deficit has is believed to be around £93 million, largely because of cash borrowed in a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) agreement.

Campaigners are hoping community action can ensure hospital bosses are held to account about plans for the hospital including the sale of land to raise cash for improvements and staffing levels.

Charlotte Munroe will be one of the keynote speakers at the meeting.

The Whipps Cross Unison union activist was sacked in 2014 after speaking out over service cuts, but was reinstated last month following an industrial tribunal.

She said: “Health staff must be able to speak out for their patients and services without fear.

"They must be free to organise themselves in trade unions and stand as representatives knowing that their rights as a union rep will be respected, and that the role of an independent union campaigning for the interests of the staff, their patients and services is also respected."

The meeting will be held at the Ex-Servicemen’s club in Harvey Road, Leytonstone from 7.30pm on April 28.
