A jumble sale on a mass scale has been organised by a creative artist to strengthen community ties.

The area of Highams Park will be transformed into a giant jumble yard on Sunday (April 26) as 85 homes and businesses set up stalls selling junk, treasure, vintage, crafts, cakes and homemade lemonade.

The first-ever Highams Park Jumble Trail has been organised by Xylonite Arts, an art and exhibition space selling vintage items in Winchester Road.

It was opened by artist and curator Lili Spain, of Vincent Road in Highams Park, in October last year.

So far, 85 stall have been confirmed and the trail will coincide with the monthly Farmers Market by Highams Park Station.

Maps of the trail will be available at Xylonite Arts, V & A Books in The Avenue, Grace and Albert Cookshop in Hale End Road and the Yellow Bear E17 stall at the market.

Ms Spain, who is also chair of the Highams Park Planning Group's arts and culture group, said: "I’m delighted at the response to Sunday's Jumble Trail.

"The event was primarily set up to bring the community together.

"Even before the day it has people talking to their neighbours, who otherwise they may only say 'morning' to.

"I hope the entire community will be out in support of this event and will get to go home with bags of goodies too."

The £5 stall fee will go directly towards the cost of printing guides for the Highams Park Festival of Culture from July 9 to 25.
