A man inspired by a windy day in a playground with his five-year-old daughter has published his first children’s book.

Andrew Dodgson, of Ronans Crescent in Woodford Green, wrote Bill Bagler – Worldwide Traveller, a rhyming story of a plastic bag which goes around the world.

With an o-level in technical drawing and having studied graphic design at Loughton College, the author also illustrated the book.

Andrew said his daughter Natasha, who attends Churchfields Infant School in South Woodford, was the inspiration for the work.

“She is always bringing books home and loves the ones that rhyme, we always read together and I thought I would have a go at writing my own book," he said.

“It was when I was with Natasha in Churchfields playground earlier this year, it was a windy day and the bins were overflowing.

“Plastic bags were flying around and I joked that they play on the swings when no one is around, the character Bill Bagler came about from this.

“It is a story about a journey with a light message about recycling and the environment, there is a lot of rubbish about nowadays.

“It is a satisfying hobby to have, some people play golf or do some gardening but I have chosen to publish my own book.

“I am so pleased with the positive feedback I have been getting, people have been getting in touch saying how much they enjoy the book.”

Mr Dodgson, who in his job produces training material for the visually impaired and in rehabilitation, has donated books to Churchfields school.

He also said the self-publishing process was much easier than he thought, only taking about a month to be put together.

“Speaking to people about how to publish a book I assumed it would be a costly and lengthy process but it was far from that," he said.

“All I did was get in touch with a self-publishing company online, paid them £10 to get proof and I can now purchase them for a discounted price.

“It is an exciting time and I am already thinking about what to write about in my next book.”
