Pupils have been given their own taste of election fever during a hard-fought campaign for the positions of head boy and head girl. 

Primary and secondary pupils at Buxton School, in Cann Hall Road, Leytonstone, casting their votes on Friday for the pupil they want to represent them. 

Each candidate produced a three pledge manifesto and created their own election video.

Around 76 per cent of pupils turned out to vote, with Lawrence Nyarko, 15, elected as head boy and Andra Jicmon chosen as head girl.

Andra has promised to set up an anti-bullying committee as part of her pledge, while Lawrence has promised to try and offer a wider variety of sports at lunchtime. 

Community and extended school's leader, Carol Moloney said: "Our election process for head boy and girl has brought democracy and politics to life in our school this week.

"Planned a week before the British general election, our candidates have generated huge interest in voting rights and the election process."

Lawrence's brother Emmanuel Owusu was voted as the primary school's head boy alongside Imogen Whelan as head girl.
