Dogs were dressed as Star Wars characters as the Walthamstow May Fair attracted its largest ever attendance.

More than a thousand people attended the annual event in Lloyd Park yesterday, with Labour parliamentary candidate Stella Creasy judging the unusual dog show.

It featured pets dressed as characters including Darth Vader and Princess Leia, as well as categories including Smiliest Dog and Dog That Looks Most Like Owner.

Mairi Johnson, chairwoman of organisers Friends of Lloyd Park, said: "We thought the event was a great success.

"We don't count the attendees but we think it was our biggest turnout yet so maybe a couple of thousand people.

"We know that park users like dressing up because there were quite a few costumes and props in evidence last year when we had the Dog that looks most like William Morris category, so we thought there would be a good showing.

"We also thought Star Wars would be popular because of the certain air of the ridiculous which we seem to like around here."
