Over a thousand people attended the re-opening of a derelict factory as a new £1 million community creative space on Saturday (May 2).

Gnome House in Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow played host to African drumming, classical Indian dancing, a street-dance workshop and bouncy castles.

The ribbon was cut by local children and held by Aisling Fahey, young poet laureate for London and mayor of Waltham Forest Terry Wheeler.

Local resident Mark Burton, a volunteer director of the Gnome House Community Interest Company who will manage the building was delighted after nine month refurbishment.

He said: "A year ago it was a crumbling, derelict factory. On Saturday, it was bursting with life, noise and creativity.

"It was overwhelming to see so many people from our community come and take part in a magical day. Gnome House has launched and it's future as a community and creative hub is tremendously exciting."
