Labour wrestled Ilford North from the Conservatives as Wes Streeting was announced as MP with just 589 votes in it.
Conservative Lee Scott was hoping to win a third term as MP for the constituency but rival Mr Streeting gained a 6.3 per cent swing from blue to red during last night’s election count at Redbridge town hall in Ilford.
Labour won 21,463 votes to the Conservatives' 20,874.
UKIP’s Philip Hyde got 4,355 votes and Lib Dems' Richard Clare received 1,130.
The Green Party’s David Reynolds won 1,023 votes, with independent candidate Doris Osen scooping 87.
After the results were announced, Mr Scott said he was retiring from politics.
On Twitter Mr Streeting said: “Blood, sweat, tears and we bloody did it.
“Thanks to the best campaign team in the world! It really hasn't sunk in.
“Lee Scott served Ilford North for 10 years as our MP.
“He's a good man and I wish him, Estelle and family well for future."
