Iain Duncan Smith has thanked his constituents for re-electing him for a sixth term as MP for Chingford and Woodford Green.

The Conservative MP secured 20,999 votes, a 19.1 per cent majority over his rivals. Labour's Bilal Mahmood followed in second place with 12,613 votes and UKIP in third position with 5,644 votes.

After eight hours of counting at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, the result came in shortly before 6.20am and was announced by Waltham Forest mayor councillor Terry Wheeler.

Liberal Democrat Anne Crook arrived in fourth place with 2,400 votes- an 11 per cent drop from 2010 when the party came third in the constituency with 7,242.

The Green Party's Rebecca Tully received 1,854 votes followed by Trade Union and Socialist Coalition candidate Len Hockey with 241 and Class War with 53 votes.

His victory speech, albeit short and sweet, was interrupted throughout by Class War activists, including candidate Lisa McKenzie, who heckled "murderer" from the floor.

He said: "I am very happy to be re-elected to represent this great constituency.

"It is a huge privilege to be chosen by the people of Chingford and Woodford Green to represent them again.

"I would like to thank the returning officer, all of the staff and the police for working incredibly hard to make this a reasonably straight-forward election.

"I also would like to thank all of the Conservative Association and councillor John Moss for having worked so fantastically, and most of all, my constituents for returning me yet again to represent them.

"I promise to represent and help them no matter what their circumstances are."

Following the speech, Mr Duncan Smith was escorted out of the Assembly Hall by police.

Election turnout was slightly lower in Chingford and Woodford Green this year at 66 per cent, compared to 66.5 per cent in 2010.

The constituency had the highest voter turnout in Waltham Forest with Walthamstow and Leyton and Wanstead both level at 63 per cent.

In total, 43,923 casted a vote which is 817 more people than in 2010.

Mr Duncan Smith was hoping turnout would hit the 70 per cent-plus mark as seen in the constituency during the 1980s and 90s.

A total of 129 votes were discounted.
