Three baby boys died in unexpected and unexplained circumstances last year, a report has revealed.

The Redbridge Child Death Overview Panel Annual report shows that between April 2013 and March 2014, there were 13 deaths reviewed of children up to the age of 18 in the borough.

Of this total, ten were explainable deaths with reasons including chromosomal, genetic and congenital anomalies.

But the three unexpected deaths, classed as infant boys, were listed as sudden and unexplained.

Vicky Hobart, director of Public Health at Redbridge council, said: "Promoting child health and wellbeing, and safeguarding vulnerable children is a key priority in Redbridge.

"The following recommendations have been made to improve child health, safety and wellbeing and reduce the number of child deaths in the future.

"To reinforce messages on reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Deaths, raise awareness of the Toxic Trio factors of domestic violence, substance misuse and parental mental ill health, raise awareness of the risks of consanguineous parenthood amongst those who are carriers of genetic conditions, and to promote the prevention of non-intentional injuries or accidents."

The report is set to be discussed at Redbridge council’s Health and Wellbeing Board meeting next Monday (May 18).
