The search is on to trace children featured in a photo taken in Leyton as the nation celebrated victory in Europe in 1945.

Frank Davidson, of Gaynes Hill Road in Woodford Bridge, found the photo of children sitting around a table in Melbourne Road, Leyton, after his mother, Lilian, passed away in 2011.

The photo had been taken by a Guardian photographer on May 8 1945.

Mr Davidson, a retired glazier, lived with his parents in Melbourne Road before moving to his grandparents' house in Lea Bridge Road in 1951.

He discovered the photo in the loft of the family's three-bedroom home in Lea Bridge Road.

The 75-year-old said: "I came across the photograph in storage after my mother passed away four years ago.

"Somehow she managed to get a copy of it and the names of the 13 children were written on the back.

"She had hand-written Guardian photographer on the back next to the names.

"I don't think many street party pictures would have survived from 70 years ago so I thought it would be nice to see if anyone is still alive and remembers the celebrations."

The names of the children are as follows, Maureen Bowes, Sheila Davidson, Rita Darwell, Betsy Boston, Lily?, Peter Beard,  Jerry Rowe, Bryan Woosted, Edma Thacker, Jean Brett and Shirley Wood.

Over one million people celebrated in the streets to mark VE Day with crowds marching from Trafalgar Square up to the Mall and Buckingham Palace where they were greeted from the balcony by King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and prime minister Winston Churchill.
