Crime has not increased in a residential area as a result of a McDonald's branch operating 24 hours a day, police have said.

Franchisee John Loizou of the branch in Sewardstone Road, Chingford, was granted permission in November to open his restuarant and drive-thru open around the clock, seven days a week, despite opposition.

People living close to the outlet, including residents next door at Wingrove House, a 25-flat housing association block for over-55s with low-level health needs, feared their lives would be disrupted through noise and anti-social behaviour.

Wingrove House residents objected to the plans in October

The Chingford branch started opening as 24-hour this month and is the second McDonald's in Waltham Forest to become 24-hour alongside the branch in High Road, Leytonstone.

Speaking at a ward panel meeting last night (May 13) PC Darren Brand of Chingford Green Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), said: "There has been no issues whatsoever.

"There were fears tons and tons of crime would happen but it just has not happened.

"However, we will continue to monitor the situation closely."

Mr Loizou anticipates sales of 20 meals an hour between 11pm and 5am.

Extra CCTV including a number-plate recognition system has been installed and extra staff have been recruited for the night-time shifts.

As part of the licensing approval, deliveries are not allowed between the hours of 11pm and 5am.
