Community groups are being urged to apply for lottery grants after Redbridge was listed as a priority borough for funding.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has designated the borough a “Priority Development Area” meaning that groups will have a better chance of securing thousands of pounds of grants in the next few years.

Cllr Jas Athwal, leader of Redbridge’s Labour council, said: “With such a rich and diverse heritage we are absolutely delighted that the HLF has identified Redbridge as an area for priority development.

“This could see considerably more investment into the borough at a time where funding has been particularly difficult to come by.

“We look forward to seizing this exciting opportunity to open up the history of this borough to both residents and visitors."

HLF funding can be used to fund a range of projects and events that celebrate and promote the history of Redbridge.

For example, Wanstead United Reformed Church and St. Gabriel’s Church in Aldersbrook received a combined £33,300 last year to investigate the contributions and sacrifices made by their congregations during the Great War.

HLF Development Officer, Richard McClenaghan, said: “The area has an amazing history – its unique industries, architecture, landscape and traditions.

“The identification of Redbridge as a priority for funding will allow us to ensure that local groups can take advantage of the lottery grants available to them.

“HLF would like the communities of Redbridge to experience the rewards of an HLF project and I would urge those with heritage project ideas to contact me to explore opportunities for funding.”
