Reckless drivers who raced at 110mph on the North Circular have been banned from driving. 

Police in an unmarked car spotted a convoy of modified cars travelling on the A406 between Beckton and Ilford at around 9pm on January 11. 

The officers joined the convoy and two of the cars accelerated at high speed in an apparent race. 

They were clocked hitting speeds of just over 110mph in the 50mph zone. 

The cars were eventually pulled over near the Crooked Billet roundabout in Walthamstow.  

Umer Aftidi, 32, of Lea Bridge Road, Leyton was found guilty at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on May 13 of road racing on a public highway, driving without due care and attention and excess speed. 

He was disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to sit an extended driving test to regain a licence. 

He was also ordered to pay £2,000 in fines must forfeit the Honda Civic Type-R car he was driving at the time of the offences. 

Thesecond driver, Vinay Mohan Tailor, 25, of Marston Road in Ilford, pleaded guilty to road racing, driving without due car care and attention and excess speed. 

He was sentenced on April 17 at Stratford Magistrates’ Court to a three-year driving ban and ordered to pay £1,200 in fines. 

PC Chris Simmons, of the Met’s East London Traffic Unit, said: "This is a great example of how the courts are now dealing with drivers who commit such acts of horrendous driving on the public roads of east London. 

“We appreciate that car enthusiasts travel to the area for organised meets.  

"However, using their vehicles to cause anti-social behaviour such as driving excessively fast or partaking in road racing on public roads and car parks will not be tolerated.  

"We will use all methods at our disposal to identify those responsible and place them before London's courts."
