A programme which sees members of the community support children facing the risk of exclusion from school has been hailed a success.

People from across the borough volunteered to mentor primary school pupils displaying disruptive and challenging behaviour.

East London charity Chance UK's programme helps children develop in social settings by developing self confidence and providing an opportunity to express themselves.

Waltham Forest mayor, Cllr Terry Wheeler, gave out certificates to children who have graduated from the scheme at a recent ceremony.

Waltham Forest Programme Manager, Chris Davison, said: “The children graduating from our programme have shown real guts and determination to make positive changes to their behaviour.

"I am proud of all that they have achieved but they couldn’t have done it without their mentors.

“I am always amazed by the dedication and selflessness of our volunteers who act as role models to these children and help them realise their true potential.

"I am excited about the future for every child who has graduated today and want to say a huge thank you to all the mentors for making a difference."

Mentoring is open to anyone over 18 years of age.
