A national karate champion helped a club raise £200 for a lung cancer charity in memory of a black-belt member.

Tim Ahmet, a national under 21s karate champion, led the training event with Chingford Karate Club on Sunday (May 17) at Chingford Leisure Centre in New Road, Chingford.

A total of £200 was raised in total and will be donated to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in memory of Liz Lafbury, who trained with Chingford Karate Club and was a black-belt member of Shotokan Karate England based at Broomstick Hall Road, Waltham Abbey.

The mother-of-one from Chingford died in 2014 aged 58 from lung cancer.

The Waltham Abbey club broke a karate world record attempt on May 10 by completing 11,700 choreographed movements over three hours, beating the previous holders by over 3,000 movements and raising £22,000 for the lung cancer charity.

Chingford Karate Club member, Senel Dervish, said: "The Katathon was a great success so we wanted to do an event in our own borough where the club's first started and where Liz trained.

"We have supported many other charities before but Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is one that is close to our hearts."
