An internal review has been launched into the police response to a couple having sex in full public view.

The man and woman, described as both being in their mid-20s with dark hair, were seen having intercourse by hundreds of people at around 7.20pm last Tuesday (May 12) in the middle of George Green in Wanstead.

Witnesses said the police twice asked the couple to move on, but did not take any further action despite the couple continuing to have sex when the officers left.

Today Rick Tyson, chief inspector of Redbridge police, confirmed the service was looking into whether the officers could have reacted differently to the incident.

He said: "We are conducting an internal review into the appropriateness of the police response.

“We have had no previous reports of this type of incident taking place at George Green, Wanstead.

“We will however be speaking to witnesses, looking at mobile phone footage and speaking with local residents to address any concerns they may have."
