Construction has started to completely rebuild a Scout hall in a £300,000 project which leaders hope will “become a valued local resource”.

The new headquarters of the Epping Forest South Scout District is currently being built on the corner of Hollybush Hill, Snaresbrook, and High Street, Wanstead.

Work to demolish the old building started on April 13 and Woodford Interiors has already started erecting the new structure, to be completed by August 31 this year.

The Rovsco Hall was originally built in 1977 with a quoted life expectancy of 15 years.

Despite this, 2015 was the 38th year of its existence, with leaders describing it as "tired" and “costing a fortune to maintain”.

Another Scout building in West Grove, Woodford Green, was sold two years ago and the money has been put towards this new hall.

When finished it will continue to be used by a number of local community groups including the Aldersbrook Dog School, Epping Forest Outdoor Group, 3rd Woodford Guides & Heron Rangers and Claddagh Dance School.

Paul Plane, chairman of Epping Forest South District Scout Council, said the plans had the backing of people living in the area.

He said: “A number of local residents have complimented the plans for the new hall and it is hoped that it will become a valued local resource.

“All the volunteers throughout the district and its groups are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for the children who take part in scouting and who learn the importance of working together to achieve more than they can as individuals.

“They deserve a decent hall."

The group needs to raise another £10,000 to equip the new hall.
