The result of a public consultation into a controversial plan which could see the density of housing quadruple in Wanstead and Woodford is set to be revealed next week.

One of the options being considered for the Local Development Framework (LDF) 2015-30 by Redbridge council could see large scale developments in traditionally suburban “major corridors” in Woodford Green, South Woodford and Wanstead.

Other options include building on existing, unspecified “parcels” of green belt land, and developing Oakfield playing fields in Fencepiece Road, Ilford.

Speaking at the full council meeting last night (May 21) at Redbridge town hall, Labour council leader Jas Athwal announced that the LDF report was set to be made public.

The results of the consulation will be released online on Wednesday (May 27) before being discussed at a council committee meeting the following Wednesday (June 3).

Then a vote by councillors will be made on which option to choose at a full council meeting on June 11.

Cllr Athwal said: “The Local Development Framework advisory panel met last night (May 20) and their recommendations will go to a committee meeting, after which we will hold an extraordinary council meeting where a full vote will take place.

“We will wait for the results of the consultations then we can discuss what to do."

This news comes after a report released this week revealed that between 2010 and 2013 Redbridge council was the third worst in the capital for failing to hit house-building targets.

They only managed to build 38.8 per cent of its target in this time.

Back in Octrober last year, Liberal Democrat councillor for Roding ward, Gwyneth Deakins, called the Wanstead and Woodford proposal "nonsense and completely perverse" while Conservative councillor Christopher Cummins, for Snaresbrook ward, said it was "unfortunate and alarming".

The Neighbourhoods and Communities Service Committee meeting will take place at 7.15pm on June 3 at Redbridge town hall in Ilford.
