Commuters using the overground line in Waltham Forest will benefit from cheaper fares as of next week.

Transport for London (TfL) has pumped £25million of investment into upgrading facilities as part of its takeover of the Chingford to Liverpool Street service.

The line, currently operated by Abellio Greater Anglia, will become part of London Overground on Sunday (May 31).

As part of the takeover, passengers have been promised cheaper pay-as-you-go (PAYG) fares with some fares falling by up a third.

A peak PAYG ticket from Chingford to Liverpool St currently costs £4.90, but will be reduced to £4.70 under TfL's fare structure.

The same peak journey from Highams Park and Wood Street (zone 1-4) will stay the same as £3.80.

Those travelling from zones 1 to 3 (Walthamstow Central) will also remain the same at £3.30.

There will be no change in off-peak PAYG travel from zones 1 to 3, 4 and 5.

However, PAYG fares to travel between Chingford (zone 5) and Walthamstow Central (zone 3) will fall by 11 per cent from £2.70 to £2.40.

Passengers will see the biggest reduction commuting from zone's 3 to 4 whereby peak PAYG fares will drop from £2.30 to £1.70 under TfL.

All TfL concessions and discounts will transfer to the overground line, including free travel for under 11s accompanied by an adult, cheaper photocard fares for under 16s, and free travel for customers with a 60+ London Oyster photocard, Freedom Pass or Veterans Oyster photocard.

Any fares currently below TfL levels such as Greater Anglia's weekly, monthly and annual season tickets "will remain unchanged and no tickets will be withdrawn," TfL has promised.

Earlier this month, TfL's director of London rail, Jonathon Fox, said: "It is not anticipated that there will be any fare increases or any changes to printed single tickets or point-to-point season tickets."

London Mayor Boris Johnson has described TfL's takeover of suburban rail services out of Liverpool St as a "no brainer" and anticipated more people "will reap the benefits of rail devolution."

Managing director for London Rail, Mike Brown, added: "We are very pleased to take over responsibility for these routes into and out of Liverpool Street, and over time, look forward to improving the services for the passengers using them.

"Just as on London Underground, people will see staff at our stations at all times when trains are running - providing reassurance to the public as well as a turn up and go service for disabled customers.

"Passengers will also benefit from new fares which, in the most cases, will save them money, with Oyster and contactless payment continuing to provide the best value."
