Expert framers who started out in trendy Notting Hill have brought their business to a busy Waltham Forest street in the hope of promoting art in their home town.

Kirsten Schmidt and Elaine McCloskey have opened the brand new E17 Art House in Hoe Street, Walthamstow.

Local artists’ work is being showcased alongside paintings by established names in the industry at the new store, which also sells a range of ‘affordable’ gifts.

The duo commuted to Portobello Road for five years then occupied a ‘low key’ premises in Churchill Business Centre for the last five.

Now, they have branched out to open their own store which Stella Creasy MP officially opened yesterday.

“It is mainly a picture framers but we also showcase affordable art by east London artists – there are so many great talents in Walthamstow and Leyton we are really lucky to be able to show them,” Ms McCloskey said.

“People love arts here so it’s very well supported. I think people will appreciate our expertise.

“We have a knowledge of the current art scene and know how to frame appropriately. We sell as many Waltham Forest products as we can. If you want great art this is the place to find it “Opening up at this end (Hoe Street) is making a difference to the area.

“This is going to be an area to watch, it is really exciting.”

Alongside art by both established artists and local residents the duo hopes to promote all things Waltham Forest and have already uncovered some star products.

“We discovered Soapsmith soaps which are manufactured in Forest Road and sold in Selfridges. They have never publicised themselves in this area, so that is really great,” Elaine added.

“With our larger space we have the opportunity to sell affordable gifts. We have a lot of products from small designers in London.”

Both women have backgrounds in the art industry with Elaine being a graphic designer and Kirsten a fine-artist printmaker.

All staff have artistic backgrounds and area knowledge.

Kirsten said: “It's been wonderful how the E17 community have welcomed us, to be here in our new premises for the Art Trail will be especially exciting.”
