Fundraising has begun for a legal challenge to part of the multi-million pound cycling scheme dubbed Mini Holland.

The £33million scheme is set to be introduced in Walthamstow and Leyton has divided the community, with some claiming it is necessary to improve safety and the environment while others insist it will cause congestion and limit access to businesses.

A group called E17Streets4All reports it has started the process of court action against the authority over its introduction in two streets in the village area of Walthamstow and has begun fundraising for the case.

However, it has not been made clear on exactly what grounds the scheme is being challenged.

An online petition of support now has 1,250 signatures.

Deputy council leader and cabinet member for environment, Cllr Clyde Loakes, said the authority will not back down.

He said: “We have received a challenge regarding a traffic closure on two roads in the Walthamstow Village section of the Mini-Holland scheme, and are collating evidence as part of our response.

“Given the overall support that residents have shown for the scheme and our efforts to make the borough a healthier, safer and more pleasant environment for everyone, we are defending our position robustly.”

Roadworks preparing for the Mini Holland scheme are currently being carried out across the Walthamstow village area.
