Tributes have been paid to a “larger than life” campaigner who was found dead at home on Sunday.

Katy Andrews, a well-known known supporter of charities and environmental and community campaigns, was described as a passionate activist.

On the day of her death, she led a cycle ride as part of the annual 'beating the bounds' event.

A close friend discovered Katy's body in her home the following day.

In 2010, Katy stood as a Liberal Democrat candidate in Lea Bridge Ward, but narrowly missed out on the seat to the Labour candidates.

Abi Woodman paid tribute on behalf of the Save Lea Marshes group.

She said: “Save Lea Marshes was saddened to hear of the death of Katy Andrews.

“A stalwart of the campaign to ensure the marshes remain open and green, she worked tirelessly to share the essence of the marshes she loved so well and she will be missed by all that knew her.

“She was instrumental in ensuring annual traditions, like Beating the Bounds and Apple Yowling, continued into the 21st century, she was a fount of arcane knowledge about the area, and she continually reminded us how much fun direct action can be.

“Always buzzing with ideas, she had a mischievous sense of humour, took no prisoners when she had something to say and she could persuade anyone anywhere to do her photocopying for her.

“She is also the only anarchist Lib Dem we are ever likely to meet. Our thoughts are with her close friends and family at this time. Katy, we miss you.”

Former Lib Dem councillor, Mahmood Hussain, praised Katy for her tireless community work.

He said: “I am deeply saddened by the death of Katy Andrews, a well known, outstanding and a tireless community worker.

“As a former High Street Lib Councillor, I had the privilege to working with her for many years, on the issues ranging from environment, which was very dear to her, to the plight of homelessness.

“She really was a true champion in highlighting the issues she believed in.

“She will be remembered as good all round hard working person who would do anyone a favour.

“Waltham Forest has lost a good citizen.”

Resident Graham Larkbey said Katy would be greatly missed throughout the borough.

He said: “Shocked and saddened to read of the sudden death of Katy Andrews. We have lost a larger-than-life local character with a heart of gold, and an utterly committed and passionate campaigner.”

In a statement, Voluntary Action Waltham Forest described Katy as "one-of-a-kind".

It said: “Everyone at Voluntary Action was shocked and saddened to hear this tragic news and our thoughts are with Katy’s family and friends during this difficult time.

“Katy was a former member of our Board and played an instrumental role in countless local causes and campaigns over the years.

“Katy was one of a kind. Her determination, dedication to her community, energy and colourful character will be greatly missed.”

Friend Rita Acharya admitted Katy divided opinion, but was held in great affection by many.

She said: “Waltham Forest has lost an invaluable treasure. Katy had amazing historical knowledge and she was known by everyone.

“She was a bit like marmite for some people - they liked her or they didn’t but she was a wonderful, wonderful person and a very dear friend.

“I can still see her now, sitting in the garden last week in her summer frock with her newspaper and her sandals off to the side.”
