Thousands of people are expected to turnout on the streets of north Chingford today for the largest community-led festival in Waltham Forest.

The Chingford Village Festival, taking place today in and around Chingford Green, has been organised by Irene Bull for the last 21 years.

This year's event is being supported by the Guardian and is sponsored by car supermarket Motorpoint, based in Lee Valley Road, Chingford.

Similar to last year, London Assembly member Jennette Arnold OBE will be opening the event at midday.

Dozens of new acts taken an interest this year and more venues are hosting entertainment, so crowds can expect new faces and entertainment for all ages, including England's only professional basketball team the London Lions and salsa duo Andreas and Julia, ranked fifth in the UK, among many others.

This year, Ms Bull has rented out the Assembly Hall which will packed out with a Great British tea room, a fashion show, children's tombola and a First World War exhibition by Chingford Foundation School.

Shelly Twinn will host an afternoon of live music on the main stage with entertainment continuing until 9pm.

Following a break in 2013, last year's event saw up to 15,000 visitors throughout the day.

Children will be entertained by superheroes, a Star Wars Jedi and Disney characters as they indulge in a chocolate fountain, have their face-painted or get a zombie make-over.

Other venues in action include the United Services Club, a gardener's question time and Ukulele singing inside Mornington Hall, tug of war, zombie make-overs and children's entertainment at Mornington Hall Gardens, and an acoustic tent behind St Peter and St Paul's Parish Church.

Ms Bull is expecting a record turn-out.

She said: "It looks set to break the records of past attendances if community involvement is anything to go by."
