A petition backed by MP Iain Duncan Smith calling for a rethink on a planning brief which would allow high-rise development in a suburban area has triggered a council debate.

The South Woodford Society petition, which opposed the relaxation of height restrictions for housing developments in the Station Estate, near South Woodford station, has attracted the 1,500 signatures needed to force a full Redbridge council debate.

The council has allocated the estate as a housing development opportunity under the Local Development Framework (LDF).

More than 100 flats and houses could be built, with the brief stating that "tall buildings up to 12 storeys" would be allowed.

The society campaign, backed by Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith, is calling for a review over claims the plan could set a precedent and alter the character of the area.

Chair of South Woodford Society, Pearl Arbenser-Simmonds, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the response to the petition.

“This is a clear indication that residents, businesses and visitors to South Woodford have had enough of the arbitrary decisions made by the council that adversely impact our environment.”

A Redbridge council spokesman has said the planning brief had taken into account comments made during a public consultation in December.

He added it was only an indication of what development may be appropriate in the area rather than definite development proposals.
