A CCTV image has been released of a man about to attack a Good samaritan who intervened to protect a woman. 

The man is wanted by police in connection with the attack in Station Road, Chingford. 

At around 5.50am, a lorry driver was making a delivery at Tesco Express when he noticed a couple arguing. 

As the attacker, described as being in his early twenties, became more aggressive towards the woman, the driver intervened and was punched several times. 

The image shows the moment the man is poised to launch his attack.

Police said he sustained significant bruising to his back and ribs. 

At some point during the assault, the woman walked off towards Willow Street.

It is understood the attacker then drove off in what was believed to be a Smart car in the direction of Willow Street.

Detective Constable Ayres said: "Given the time of the morning it would have been very quiet but I'm confident that someone will recognise the individual we are seeking to trace.

"Any information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence."
