Fashion students have paid homage to designer Alexander McQueen in their own show.

Waltham Forest College students attempted to emulate his work with their own designs for the event, Shades of Grey.

To incorporate the influence McQeen, who committed suicide five years ago, they garmets in a variety of grey styles for the show.

Shades of Grey aimed to reflect an exhibition of McQueen's work currently being shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Before rising to fame as on of the world's most innovative and successful designers, he had lived in a terraced house in Stratford.

Fashion lecturer Dawn Musharafe said: "The students visited the V&A to see McQueen’s Savage Beauty retrospective to provide the inspiration for their spectacular neckpieces.

"They were awestruck by the complexity of McQueen's work and they wanted their collection to reflect that.

"McQueen was the son of a cabbie who grew up in east London and went on to achieve greatness.

"We believe our students, many from similar backgrounds, can go on to achieve great things."

She said: "I have attended many fashion shows at many colleges in my career and this was astounding.

"I was amazed at the creativity, technique, and skill the students displayed in putting together their collections."
