Councillors and future residents have visited a new 'dementia-friendly' housing development on the site of an out-dated care home.

The Verdon Roe Court development in Flaxen Road, Chingford, comprises of 45 affordable homes and was designed by East Thames for people to live independently, but who still require some level of care and support.

It was one of two care home sites in Chingford to be redeveloped by the housing association, with the other eight-home development for people with mental health needs built in May Road.

Cabinet member for adult services councillor Angie Bean and cabinet member for housing, councillor Khevyn Limbajee joined residents for a tour of the Flaxen Road development on Tuesday (June 16).

Opening next month, each apartment is self-contained and is surrounded by a landscaped garden.

East Thames Verdon Roe Court has been designed to facilitate the borough's ageing population and is designed to be 'dementia-friendly' with colour schemes on each floor.

Charlie Culshaw, East Thames director of care and support said the development is "unrivalled in the current market" and is a "genuinely innovative offering."

Lesley Murray, whose mother Mary is currently recovering from a hip operation and moving into Verdon Roe Court next month, said: "Verdon Roe Court is a lovely place and it’s going to make our lives a lot better.

"It will give me, my sister and my mum real peace of mind, just knowing that mum is here and she’s safe.

"I didn’t know anything about extra care before but it sounds like a wonderful way of dealing with the problems mum faces."

Cllr Angie Bean, added: "When our residents with care needs move into these homes, they will have all the support they need to live as independently and actively as possible, while still being able to access round-the-clock help with things like taking medication, cooking, cleaning and generally staying safe."
