A mother said she was left "shaking with anger" after a station guard refused to help her carry her buggy down three flights of stairs.

Kelly Chappell, 37, was travelling with her son, Stanley, from Buckhurst Hill train station on Wednesday (June 24) when she said she asked a guard at the ticket office to help her carry the pram to the platform.

The guard refused after stating that it was "against the law" for him to do so, Ms Chappell claimed.

Mrs Chappell said: “I was shaking with anger.

“I was going up in to London with my baby and there were delays so I was speaking to the guard about whether or not to bother.

“I then asked him if he would help me get the buggy down the stairs.

“He turned around and said ‘no, it is against the law for me to help you’.

“I said I would take the baby out, I just needed help taking the buggy down.

“He just said no again and carried on talking to his colleagues.

“I was furious, I had to take the buggy apart and carry Stanley down the stairs in one part, leave him unattended and then run up and get the other part.

"It is difficult enough trying to get round with a pram without being declined help when you really need it.

"Would he have said no if it wasn't an empty buggy, but instead an old lady's shopping bags?

“I have had help from other station guards without any problem.

“They strike all the time saying they need guards in the ticket office but they don’t want to help.

“They may as well not be there.”

TfL has been approached for comment.
