Proposed changes to one of Waltham Forest's busiest roads as part of the Mini-Holland cycling scheme have been revealed.

The plans for Lea Bridge Road will be released in stages, but the first details include an attempt to make Whipps Cross Roundabout safer and revive the economy in the road, which stretches from the Leytonstone/Walthamstow border to Hackney.

The proposal involves turning the roundabout into a large t-junction, with new crossing points added at Hospital Road and Wood Street.

Each crossing would use new ‘elephant footprint’ road markings, which have recently been endorsed by the Department for Transport and indicate where cycles can cross the road.

There would also be a new signalised junction where Wood Street meets Lea Bridge Road.

Plans for public space elements to the scheme include a community orchard near bus stops in Whipps Cross Road.

The plans also include the redesign of the bridge between Lammas Road and Orient way to imprve crossings.

There would also be fully segregated cycle lanes along the end of the road towards Hackney.

The public can comment on the plans until July 18.

Lea Bridge Road is used by up to 30,000 vehicles per day and 1,500 cyclists as a major route into Hackney and central London.

According to the council, between 2009 and 2013 there were 173 cyclists and 68 pedestrians injured on the road, with one being killed.

The £33million Mini-Holland scheme, which involves changes to traffic flow in various locations across the borough, has split community opinion.

Many say it is necessary to improve safety and the environment, while others believe it will cause congestion and limit access to businesses.
