The biggest ever Walthamstow Folk Festival captured the original spirit of Glastonbury last weekend, it has been claimed.

Organised by Friends of Stoneydown Park with live music provided by the Walthamstow Folk Club, the annual event held in Stoneydown Park on Sunday (June 28) had its biggest attendance in five years of running.

It may not have the established line-up of The Who or Kanye West playing over the weekend at Worthy Farm but this festival is more about fostering talent that has impressed the local folk scene in the past year.

Jo Carley and The Old Dry Skulls, Tom Reid, The Mood Swingers and Billy Hill & Ramon Goose all performed to over 100 people that had gathered throughout the day.

There was also a variety of stalls, traditional Morris dancing, a beer tent for the adults and a bouncy castle for the children at the free event.

Kevin Sheils, of the Walthamstow Folk club was compere on the day, he said: “I'd like to feel that it has the Glastonbury spirit, albeit on a smaller scale. It is what Glastonbury set out to do back at the start.

“The highlight for me was seeing the local community enjoying music they may have little access to in the normal course of events.”
