A shopkeeper has been fined for selling alcohol to a child during a sting operation.

Last summer an underage volunteer was sent into Akdeniz Supermarket in Walthamstow to carry out attest purchase.

The child managed to buy a WKD Original Blue without being asked for identification from the Hoe Street store.

Now, the shopowner, Aydin Aktas, has been fined £1,900.

During the trial at Walthamstow Magistrates Court it was decided that Aktas, the store’s Designated Premises Supervisor at the time, had not given adequate training to the member of staff who made the sale.

Trading Standards had previously conducted a test purchase at the store in November 2013 and, on that occasion, a different member of staff sold alcohol to the underage purchaser.

Mr Aktas accepted a caution for the offence.

Deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, Clyde Loakes, said: “Retailers and their employees have a responsibility to protect the welfare of young people by preventing underage sales of alcohol."
