A controversial cycling scheme has won a prestigious award in the biking world.

Trial changes in the Walthamstow Village area was named the winner in the Space for Cycling category at the prestigious 2015 London Cycling Awards ceremony on June 29.

Hosted by Jeremy Vine, the ceremony celebrated the many businesses and community groups working to champion cycling in London.

The Mini Holland scheme has split opinion in the communty, with some insisting it is necessary t improve safety and the environment, while others claiming it would cause traffic congestion and restrict access to businesses.

Deputy leader of Waltham Forest council and cabinet member for environment, Councillor Clyde Loakes, said: "It is a great honour to receive this significant award and be recognised by industry leaders for our leadership and innovation in making cycling safer and more accessible for our community.” 

In September the council will host two leading industry cycling events including the 2015 London Cycling Show and inaugural National Cycling Planning Awards.

The Mini-Holland Walthamstow Village scheme will officially open on September 14, marking a major stage in the three-year project.

Consultations on the Lea Bridge Road part of the scheme are currently underway.
