A health guide has been released in a bid to stop parents taking unnecessary trips to hospital for their children.

Adults in Waltham Forest are being advised with the new booklet about common illnesses between birth and the age of five.

Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) claims too many parents are bringing their children to the accident and emergency department at Whipps Cross Hosptial.

“Almost all babies, toddlers and children get common illnesses like chickenpox, colds, sore throats and ear infections. While these are not very nice at the time, they are easily treated at home,” Dr Tonia Myers, GP and Clinical Director at Waltham Forest CCG said.

“This guide helps you quickly look up any worrying symptoms and gives advice on what to do and who to talk to. Most issues are simply an everyday part of growing up, often helped by a chat with a midwife or health visitor.

“It is important to remember that if you are worried you must get further advice: you know your child best, trust your instincts.”

All new parents in Waltham Forest will be given the guide in printed format shortly after birth by the midwife, along with their 'red book'.
