CCTV images of suspected fly-tippers could be posted online in a bid to catch and prosecute them.

Redbridge council passed the proposal last night (July 2) at the Neighbourhoods and Communities Service Committee evening at the town hall, in Ilford.

It is set to send most wanted-style pictures and video to the media in a bid to help track down fly-tippers.

They will also be posted on the council’s website.

February this year saw four separate fly-tips in Wanstead, with the corner of Nutter Lane and Preston Drive targeted twice, and Draycot Road and Malcolm Way also being blocked with rubbish.

Cllr Dev Sharma, cabinet member for civic pride, said the council had seen a 150 per cent increase in the number of fly-tips in the borough.

Also 70 per cent of complaints to the authority are about fly-tipping.

He said: “This measure will help us deal more effectively with this issue.

“We can have difficulties identifying culprits so the public’s help would mean we have a greater chance of catching fly-tippers.

“Releasing these images will not be a decision we take lightly because of potential mistakes and legal action but this is a risk we should be willing to take to tackle this problem.”
