Youngsters from secondary schools across the district have been awarded for work in the community.

The annual Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards, held on Tuesday (July 7) at St James Hawkey Hall in Woodford Green, celebrated the achievements of 69 young people aged 11 to 25.

Winners received medallions, as well as a framed certificates and a cheque for £200 each for their school or college.

Nine adults were also presented with leaders’ awards in recognition of their ability to motivate and inspire young people.

Ten students from Roding Valley High School, Loughton, one from Oak View School, Loughton, one from King Harold School, Waltham Abbey, nine youngsters from Epping Forest Youth Council, seven from Voluntary Action Epping Forest and three from East 15, Loughton, were awarded for their community work.

Students from Epping St Johns, Davenant Foundation School, Lambourne End, West Hatch High School and Debden Park High School, were also awarded.

Entertainment was provided by students from University of Essex East 15 Acting School, Epping St John’s and Davenant Foundation School.

Cllr Liz Webster, chair of Epping Forest District Council, said: “The event was inspirational. 

"I knew a little bit about Jack Petchey but I have had my eyes opened. 

"All of us have challenges to face and overcome and it takes great courage and determination to move forward to succeed in something you want to do. 

"Well these young people proved that and I am so proud of them all."

Awards founder, Jack Petchey CBE, 89, said: “I am passionate about our awards scheme which enables young people to be recognised, valued and rewarded for their achievements and positive contributions to society.”
