The future of a hospital’s accident and emergency centre, earmarked for closure, will be debated in Parliament today.

Questions on the future of King George Hospital’s A&E, used by many Redbridge residents, will be put to government ministers in an hour-long debate.

Called by Ilford South MP Mike Gapes, the debate will feature a discussion over the state of Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals trust (BHRUT) which runs the Goodmayes hospital.

The trust remains in special measures, after being found to be failing in December 2013, after a fresh inspection report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) released earlier this month.

Ilford North MP Wes Streeting is also expected to speak at the debate, which starts at 4.30pm in Westminster Hall.

Mr Streeting has vowed to fight "tooth and nail" to oppose the A&E closure plans.

Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Group has refused to budge on plans to centralise A&E services at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

The closure was orginally due to go ahead this December but will now do so when it is deemed safe.
