A landmark building in Waltham Forest will be lit up in a magical display to mark the end of Ramadan, this weekend.
The William Morris Gallery in Forest Road, Walthamstow, will be transformed with a glowing pattern projecting off the front on the building as the sun sets on Saturday.
Artist Zara Hussain’s ‘Magic Carpet’ was commissioned to officially mark the beginning of the Eid al-Fitr celebrations for Muslims in the borough, and to reflect the late William Morris’ love and admiration of Islamic carpet design.
Hussain, an MA graduate of the Islamic Art programme, has spent many years perfecting the traditional techniques used to produce mathematically precise, geometric art.
She then spent several more adapting and experimenting with techniques,
mediums and colours to create works with a contemporary resonance.
On Saturday, Hussain’s the projection will ‘carpet’ the gallery exterior with constantly changing colour, movement and light.
Traditional Islamic design will be transformed into contemporary art on the night.
The colour palette has been chosen by local residents who have made suggestions online and in the gallery.
Hussain’s projection was piloted at the inaugural Walthamstow Garden Party last year.
