The £2.5m refurbishment on Epping Forest District Museum is well underway, new pictures have revealed.

Enabled by the Heritage Lottery fund, the Waltham Abbey building is being expanded to be able to facilitate bigger collections and allow better access.

The small museum in Sun Street has been closed to the public for over a year as work is carried out.

Now, new pictures reveal work is progressing

The museum’s online blog reveals all the internal walls in the new extension have now been installed.

A post states: “This means the new spaces in the museum including the community room, temporary exhibition gallery, Core gallery and new storage spaces are really taking shape.

“The preparations for the lift are also complete and this will be installed as one of the next tasks. Once all the wiring and electrics are complete the decoration work can begin

“We hope you are looking forward to seeing the completed museum and visiting us next year.”

The project aims to bring together the majority of the museum’s collections under one roof, and the new Explore gallery will house reserve collections.

A “community and education” room will also be created, as well as an exhibition gallery for temporary events.

There are also plans to convert the oldest part of the museum, a Grade II* listed Tudor house, into an exhibit in itself.

A new lift and staircase will be installed, and the museum will be accessed by a main entrance on Sun Street when it re-opens.
