The parents of a 10-year-old boy hit on the head by falling brick while playing at the foot of a tower block have spoken of the experience for the first time.

Redbridge police are appealing for witnesses or information after not ruling out the possibility that the masonry was deliberately thrown at the boy at the 11-storey Sunset Court, in Navestock Crescent, Woodford Green.

At 7.30pm on July 8, Drin Ejupi was playing with his football at the foot of the block when a glass bottle smashed next to him.

A few seconds later a brick hit him on the head, leaving the Ray Lodge school pupil with a two-inch wound.

His mother Ymrije, who was zipping up her three-year-old son’s jacket at the time just a matter of metres away, immediately ran to her child.

The 37-year-old said: “Blood was everywhere and I was in shock, luckily a neighbour phoned the police and helped us.

“The brick must have been thrown from one of the higher levels because it fell like a bullet.

“We just kept talking to him to keep him awake, the emotion was very high.

“We don’t know how he survived but I keep thanking God.

“I don’t understand how or why this has happened.”

Police arrived within five minutes and Drin was taken to Whipps Cross in Leytonstone where he had stitches for the cut.

His father Bahrudin, 43, said his son is still suffering from dizzy spells and has not been eating or sleeping since the incident.

Bahrudin was at work in the West End at the time and because of the Tube strike had to run all the way to Liverpool Street station to get a train.

He said: “I got a phone call from my neighbour and I just ran like a dog, I had to get to the hospital as fast as possible.

“It was a horrible day.

“We have lived in the flat since 2004 and have never had a problem so this is a real shock, it is a mystery because we don’t know which floor it came from.

“I worry that this could happen to any child in the block, what if another brick gets thrown out of a window?

“We trust the police that they will find out who did it but please if anyone saw anything tell them.”
