The Walthamstow branch of the Labour Party have nominated Jeremy Corbyn for the leadership of the party, and its own MP Stella Creasy for the deputy leadership.

In a packed meeting open to all members of the Walthamstow Constituency Labour Party (WCLP)on Saturday (July 25) two separate ballots were conducted using a single round preferential vote system.

Mr Corbyn narrowly beat second placed Andy Burnham with 52 per cent of the total vote after receiving 39 of the 91 first preference votes.

Candidate Liz Kendall was knocked out in the first round with just 12 votes.

The popularity of the Islington North MP's campaign has sparked a row within the party with former Prime Minister Tony Blair among those to have warned Labour against moving to the left following a poll that put Mr Corbyn ahead of other candidates.

Stella Creasy won the deputy leadership nomination in the first round with a 76 per cent share of the 92 votes, far ahead of second placed candidate Tom Watson who received 15 votes from the WCLP.

Ms Creasy won enough nominations to secure a place on the ballot paper for Labour's next deputy leader just minutes before last month’s deadline.

The next and final stage of the contest is the postal ballot starting on August 14 with votes to be submitted by September 10.

Voting is open to all party members, all supporters who are affiliated to Labour through membership of an affiliated organisation, whilst other supporters can register before the closing date of August 12.

The winners will be declared at a Labour conference in London on September 12.
