A body pulled out of the River Lea 'after being chased by police' has been named locally, with the circumstances leading to his death reported to a police watchdog.

The 17-year-old, believed to be named Jack Susianta, fled his home in Clapton after smashing a window when officers were called.

The police were not attempting to arrest the boy, but attending a welfare call raised by his parents.

His body was pulled out of the canal near to Lea Bridge Road at around 5.20pm yesterday (29 July) after a frantic search by emergency services.

At 3.38pm, Hackney Police tweeted: "Jack Susianta, 17yrs missing from E5. Last seen wearing a t shirt, shorts and socks. Call 999 quoting CAD 5306."

He was missing for nearly an hour before being seen, running away again and entering the canal, the Met said.

The Hackney Police account had also tweeted appeals over the disappearance of Jack in the early hours of Tuesday (28 July), followed later by a message saying he had been found.

Jack is understood to have been a sixth-form student at Mossbourne academy in Hackney.

The incidents leading to the teenager's death have now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A spokesman said: "We deployed investigators to the scene and we are currently assessing it to determine the level, if any, of our involvement.

"We haven't yet determined whether it will be necessary for an independent investigation."

The cause of death is unknown and a postmortem examination is yet to be carried out.
