A nursery has confirmed it is challenging an Ofsted inspection score after it was ordered to improve by the education watchdog.

A ‘requires improvement’ judgement was this week given to Greenway Kindergarten, in Chigwell Road, Woodford Green.

This was a downgrade from the ‘good’ score the preschool, which was founded in 1951, received in 2012.

The report states that concerns or complaints made by parents are not kept as written records with details of any action taken.

It also says: “At times, staff miss opportunities to extend children's early reading skills fully by encouraging them to recognise letters and their sounds.

“Occasionally, staff do not give children time to think and answer questions before giving further prompts to extend their learning opportunities.”

There were no issues of safety at the preschool.

A statement from Greenway Kindergarten confirmed it was challenging the judgement.

It said: “During feedback, we were informed by the inspector that she found our setting to be a solid ‘good’ in all areas, and she offered two points for us to implement to bring it up to 'outstanding'.

“However, we were subsequently informed that the judgement from Ofsted was likely to be a ‘requires improvement’.

“This is due to an alleged breach of statutory requirements concerning whether or not we needed to record in writing a parent’s verbal concern/complaint.

“This means, according to Ofsted that we are not meeting legal requirements.

“We were also very concerned to note that between the formal feedback session and receiving the report, the two points mentioned in the feedback had now been portrayed as additional reasons for the ‘requires improvement’ judgement.

“We are currently challenging this judgement through Ofsted’s formal complaints procedure and are awaiting their response.

“We are very proud to note that the Ofsted report commends every aspect of our setting that concern’s your child’s safety, educational development and welfare, rating them all as a solid ‘good’.”
