A teenager who was selected to represent the United Kingdom at an international competition has brought home a bronze medal.

Bianca Andrei, 16, of Chigwell School in High Road, Chigwell, was selected in April to represent Britain at the International Physics Olympiad in Mumbai, India, at the beginning of this month (July 5).

After competing in several mentally challenging rounds against thousands of applicants from across the country Bianca was selected as the only female member of the United Kingdom’s team of six students and two teachers to travel and compete.

The competition, which was established in 1967, saw teenagers from more than 80 countries compete to complete two five hour exams as well as a series of excursions and social activities.

Bianca, who will take her A-Level exams in 2016, said: "My experience in India is hard to describe due to the sheer scale of the Olympiad event.

"But it was amazing to meet and make friends from all over the world and learn more about physics."

Chigwell School headmaster Michael Punt said: "I am extremely proud of Bianca.

"She has worked incredibly hard over the last few months, preparing for the Olympiad on top of her AS-levels."
