Councillors have paid tribute to pilot Kevin Whyman who was killed when his plane crashed during an air display at the weekend.

Epping Forest District Council Leader Chris Whitbread spoke out about peoples ‘shock and sadness’ over the death of 39-year-old Mr Whyman who died on Saturday (August 1) at car festival event, CarFest, which created by TV and radio presenter Chris Evans.

The father-of-one, who was part of the North Weald Airfield Gnat Display Team, was performing a low-level, close-proximity pass with another plane just before the crash.

The aircraft reportedly failed to pull up and nose-dived in Oulton Park, Cheshire, before disappearing behind trees.

Moments later a plume of thick black smoke billowed into the sky.

North Weald Airfield in Meridian Way, North Weald, which is owned by Epping Forest District Council, is currently flying its entrance flags half-mast in tribute to Mr Whyman.

Cllr Whitbread said: “I understand that two Gnats from North Weald were performing at the display.

“One is safe but Kevin Whyman has tragically lost his life.

“My heart and my condolences go out to him, his family and his friends.

“North Weald is a close-knit community of pilots and aeroplane enthusiasts.

“There is a very special spirit of friendship and camaraderie at the airfield.

“People will be hurting at this time.”
